Thanksgiving Light

At least for me, this fall has been busier than most. Թ There were trips to the Southwest, New Orleans, Skepticon, and we had a wedding to photograph (which was yesterday – congratulations Kevin and Carey). Թ All were fun, but tiring. Թ Eleven hours of sleep last night helped!

On Thanksgiving day, after arriving back home after dinner at Mom and Dad’s house (thanks for cooking!), Mary, excitement in her voice, told me to look at the light in the woods behind our house. Թ I always wish I were in a better place to catch these interesting moments of light – by a lake, a mountain, etc., but none of that is close enough since these moments usually don’t last too long. Թ This light barely lasted long enough for me to grab a camera and snap a few before it faded.Թ I’m sure that others who do live in more favorable locations, or who happened to be in the right place at the right time did much better with this light than I.

New Orleans Photography Workshop with Keith Carter

I just returned from New Orleans where I attended a workshop presented by the New Orleans Photography Workshops.  The instructor was Keith Carter.  I heard Keith speak at MSU a couple of years ago and found his lecture, along with his imagery, to be inspiring.   So going to his workshop was kind of like going to baseball camp with Joe Dimaggio (anyway, that’s what it seemed like to me).  There were eleven participants in the workshop, including me.  Quite a few were already accomplished artists and all were creative, interesting and stimulating.  Anyway, all of this has me feeling like I’ve started down a new road, and I like it.  I think I have a lot of interesting pictures ahead of me.

Now, on to the pictures.  Most are from the workshop, but the first two and last five are just things we saw during our trip.  The older man in the picture is Welmon Sharlhorne, a New Orleans artist with quite a story – if you’re curious, you should look him up!

Blog 2.0!

Holy crap – another blog!

But it’s not my first. Թ Years ago (July 2005), I started a blog onԹ Blogger. Թ It was a pretty simple blog (it’sԹ here if you want to see it), and hosted some pretty simple pictures. Թ  I was never really happy with it as a gallery since viewing pictures on a blog,Թ especiallyԹ in any quantity, is not a pleasant experience. Թ Facebook became a passable alternative since it displays albums nicely, but it’s not the place for writing anythingԹ substantive (and what kind of information black hole is Facebook, anyway).

I’m not sure I’m up to stating a purpose for this blog (other than writing and sharing stuff) – it will just have to unfold as it goes along.
